Development of the Label

Minor Music was founded by Stephan Meyner in 1984. He had collected experience working as music and broadcast journalist, concert promoter and tour agent. The debut of the label was the first recording of pianist Geri Allen „The Printmakers“. And an imprint it made indeed.

Within a short time albums by Amina Claudine Myers, Julius Hemphill, Bill Frisell, Ray Anderson and many others followed and brought international recognition. In 1987 a second label, „Rhythm Attack“, was founded and presented funk, r&b and hiphop artists as Chuck Brown, Boogie Down Productions, Bobby Byrd.

Running two labels became too strong an effort for a rather small operation and in 1990 Minor Music became again the brandname for a new over-all direction.

„Roots Revisited“ became Maceo Parker´s and Minor Music´s biggest success up to that time in 1990. This unique blend of soul jazz, r&b and contemporary jazz material became album of the year in Down Beat magazine and stayed for 13 weeks at the top of the American Billboard jazz charts.

Besides recording another four successful albums with Parker, among them the by now classic „Life on Planet Groove“, other artists of the Roots Revisited band and related ensembles became featured recording artists: Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, Karl Denson, Three of a Kind, Rodney Jones, Peter Madsen, Larry Goldings, Dwayne Dolphin. Besides presenting debut albums of young talented artists there has always been a strong interest in giving exposure to older artists deserving more recognition or featuring all-time favorites: Bertha Hope, Annette Lowman, George Coleman, Stanley Turrentine, Horace Parlan, Johnny Griffin, Oscar Brown jr.

The guitarist and singer Hans Theessink based in Vienna was the first of many european artists to extend the Minor Music catalog. Today the musical styles and directions are broader than ever, the main concern focused on quality.

The new century finds Minor Music looking for unique talents among young musicians that combine a genuine understanding of the virtues of jazz, blues and soul with a personal vision of expression. The debut of Tuey Connell „Is This Love“ truely represents that ambition and we hope for an exciting decade ahead of us.

Geschichte des Labels

Im Jahre 1984 wurde Minor Music von Stephan Meyner gegründet. Als Musikjournalist, Konzertveranstalter und Tourneenorganistor konnte er im Vorfeld jahrelang Erfahrungen sammeln. Die Premiere des Labels war zugleich das Debut der Pianisten Geri Allen „The Printmakers“. Und beide sollten tatsächlich einen starken Eindruck hinterlassen.

In kurzer Folge erschienen weitere Alben, u.a. von Amina Claudine Myers, Julius Hemphill. Bill Frisell und Ray Anderson, und führten zu einer internationalen Etablierung des Labels. 1987 ging parallel „Rhythm Attack“ an den Start, hier lag der Akzent bei Funk, R&B und HipHop, repräsentiert durch Musiker wie Chuck Brown, Bobby Byrd und Boogie Down Productions. Das entwickelte sich jedoch als ein zu umfangreiches Betätigungsfeld für eine überschaubare Firmengröße. Unter dem Dachnahmen Minor Music wurde ein neues Labelprogramm von nun an geführt.

„Roots Revisited“ wurde sowohl für Maceo Parker als auch für Minor Music 1990 zum dato bislang erfolgreichsten Album. Diese zündende Verbindung von Soul und Jazz wurde von Downbeat als Platte des Jahres ausgezeichnet und führte 13 Wochen lang die amerikanischen Billboard Jazz Charts an.

Neben vier weiteren Erfolgsalben mit Parker, darunter dem Funk-Klassiker „Life on Planet Groove“, erschienen viele Alben mit Musikern aus dem Umfeld der Roots Revisited-Band: Fred Wesley, Pee Wee Ellis, Karl Denson, Three of a Kind, Rodney Jones, Peter Madsen, Larry Goldings, Dwayne Dolphin. Darüber hinaus entstanden viele Debut-Alben junger Musiker. Ein weiteres Interesse galt immer älteren Musikern, die zuwenig Beachtung gefunden haben, oder aber auch ausgewählten Größen der Jazzgeschichte: Bertha Hope, Annette Lowman, George Coleman, Stanley Turrentine, Horace Parlan, Johnny Griffin, Oscar Brown jr.

Der Bluesmusiker Hans Theessink, beheimatet in Wien, war der erste einer ganzen Reihe von Europäern, die den Minor Music-Katalog bereichern. Und heute ist das musikalische Spektrum breiter denn je, und in erster Linie nur von Qualitätskriterien geleitet. Im neuen Jahrhundert hält Minor Music Ausschau nach jungen Talenten, die ein Gefühl und Verständnis für die Tradition mit einer persönlichen Vision in Einklang zu bringen wissen. Das Debut des Sängers Tuey Connell „Is This Love“ bringt diese Intention auf den Punkt und läßt für die nächste Dekade hoffen.
